The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

How often are words blown out of proportion to serve political agendas or economic campaigns? The “IMPEACHMENT” of U.S. President Clinton for example: Impeachment does not remove an elected official from office in and of itself, it’s just the first step of the process. But to many people, to impeach is to remove from office. Despite media headlines calling for the impeachment of the U.S. President in 1998, and despite his impeachment by the U.S. House of Representatives in December of that year, President Clinton was acquitted by the U.S. senate and continued to serve the extent of his term in office for the following three years.
Now take the word “DOWNLOAD”. Download means to receive information from a web server. But more recently its definition has been expanded wrongly by record company and film studio propaganda to mean to import video and music files from store-bought albums and dvds, or make pirated digital copies. Many computer users say they want to download music from an album to their media player or computer but this incorrect usage has been contrived. So much so that when people talk about legitimate downloads, be it video or music, many people respond to that proposition with a knee-jerk response— “Oh, I don’t download.” Just one of many words that has fallen subject to the systematic demonization of language to serve an economic or military aim.

ubuntu
I was just at SCaLE, the Southern California Linux Expo & hanging around the Ubuntu booth playing around with turning my macbook into a linux book running Ubuntu & all free and open applications. Whew, freedom at last!! And what I found particularly related to the Language Frontier show is what the African word “Ubuntu” means.
While there are over 1400 distinct languages spoken on the continent of Africa, the word “ubuntu” is used & understood in many of those languages. Ubuntu is at the heart of an open society centered around the community & true inclusiveness and it means many things: respect, helpfulness, sharing, community, caring, trust and unselfishness. One word that means so many things.
Are you tired of 7000 languages for one human race? Could a language barrier 7000 strong be contributing to the lack of understanding between people today? Did you think that Esperanto was defunct? Have you even heard of Esperanto?
Well, Esperanto is a synthesized language that is alive & it’s coming to save us all. Tune in to Episode 6 of The Language Frontier…coming soon.
Tune in to Episode 4 of The Language Frontier for an overview of how all these languages that govern our lives actually work. As Noam Chomsky says, “one part of our biological make up is specifically dedicated to language.” Check it out.
Does language really manipulate reality? Yes. Check out the “listener feedback” segment of this week’s show. Tune in to Episode 4 of The Language Frontier for an overview of how all these languages that govern our lives actually work. As Noam Chomsky says, “one part of our biological make up is specifically dedicated to language.”

What is it about languages that is so beautiful? And what compels us to keep using an inherently inefficient medium as a communication vehicle? Could it be necessity? But then why? Why a medium so inefficient? Is it a function of the new millennium that language would just all of the sudden prove itself outdated? In an emerging infrastructure that connects the over 6 and a half billion human citizens of planet earth, we use language or languages because they are our only option.William S. Burroughs said that “language is a virus”. That language has infected the entire human race. Tune in to episode 3 of The Language Frontier to explore the inefficiencies of the language infection and what is lost in the tenuous space between thought and word.
